Preparing Your Spotify Release

A great release isn't just about the song. It's about everything that surrounds it.

Every release tells a story long before anyone presses play.

Your artwork.

Your artist profile.

Your metadata.

The way you present yourself.

The music will always matter most—but everything around it shapes the first impression.

This isn't a formula for success.

It's simply what we've learned from listening to independent artists.

From writing the song to a playlist opportunity — the SPRUV release journey.

Before you release…

It's tempting to think the journey begins the moment your song appears on Spotify.

It doesn't.

It begins long before release day.

Every decision you make beforehand influences how your music is experienced—not just by listeners, but by playlist curators, blogs, labels and future collaborators.

A little preparation today can make a big difference tomorrow.

Step 01

Make sure the master is truly finished.

Once your music is released, changing the audio isn't always simple.

Before you upload anything, listen to your final master on as many systems as possible.

  • Studio monitors
  • Headphones
  • Car speakers
  • Phone speakers
  • Bluetooth speakers

If something feels wrong, trust your instincts.

Fix it now—not after release day.

Step 02

Your artwork is your first impression.

Long before someone hears your music, they see it.

Good artwork doesn't need to be complicated.

It simply needs to feel intentional.

Before publishing, ask yourself:

  • Does it represent the music?
  • Is it readable as a tiny Spotify thumbnail?
  • Does it still look good on a phone?
  • Would you stop scrolling to look at it?

Simple usually beats busy.

Step 03

Check your metadata carefully.

Metadata isn't exciting.

But mistakes stay with a release much longer than most people expect.

Before publishing, double-check:

  • Artist name
  • Track title
  • Featured artists
  • Songwriters
  • Release date
  • Genre
  • Explicit content

Correct metadata makes your music easier to discover—and avoids problems later.

Step 04

Prepare your artist profile.

Imagine someone discovers your music today.

They click your profile.

What do they find?

A complete artist profile builds trust.

Consider updating:

  • Profile photo
  • Artist biography
  • Social links
  • Artist Pick
  • Featured release

You're introducing yourself before you've said a single word.

Step 05

Think beyond release day.

Many artists spend months creating a song…

…and only one day promoting it.

Instead, plan your first week before release day arrives.

Ideas might include:

  • A teaser video
  • Behind-the-scenes photos
  • A short story about the song
  • A release announcement
  • A few social media posts spread across several days

People remember stories longer than announcements.

Step 06

Submit your strongest song.

Not every release is the right submission.

Sometimes your newest track isn't the one that represents you best.

Take a moment before submitting.

Ask yourself:

If someone discovered me through this song… would they want to hear another one?

Choose the track that introduces you in the best possible way.

Not necessarily the newest one.

Final checklist

Before releasing, ask yourself:

  • Master approved
  • Artwork finished
  • Metadata reviewed
  • Spotify profile updated
  • Release week planned
  • Strongest track selected
  • Ready to submit

One last thought

A playlist can introduce your music.

It can't make people love it.

That part is entirely up to the song.

Take the time to prepare your release.

Then let the music speak for itself.

Ready for your next playlist opportunity?

If your track is ready, we'd love to hear it. Every submission on SPRUV is reviewed by a real playlist curator.
